DP & I visited my "uncle Bob" in Southern California before we went to the IMS show in Long Beach. We toured several hot rod shops and also visited the Peterson Museum. We went to Walden Speed Shop, Moon Eye's, Baurer Speed & a few others. It was a great trip, other than the weather was at bad as New England! Ok so maybe not as bad but definitely not "sunny California"!

Fort Lauderdale Motorcycle Show

Bikers from across the country will be converging on Fort Lauderdale this December 2-5 to start this year's holiday season off with a bash by attending the 12th Annual Fort Lauderdale Harley-Davidson Bikers Bash.

The Southeast region's premier motorcycle event, this year's bash will consist of a number of police-escorted rides to the area's hottest spots, great food, bars, live music and casino fun all to benefit local Boys and Girls Clubs.

Weekend festivities will kick off at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino for the Bikers Bash VIP event and will culminate at the South Florida President's Council 23rd Annual Christmas Toys in the Sun Run, the world's largest motorcycle parade sponsored by Seminole Hard Rock Roadhouse.

Last year's motorcycle Toy Run drew thousands of bikers and raised over $750,000 to benefit the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Foundation. Since the first motorcycle Toy Run 21 years ago, bikers and supporters have raised in excess of $7,000,000 used for cancer treatments and other special needs for kids as well as feeding thousands of needy families during the holidays.

Another highlight of the weekend will be the Bikers Bash VIP event at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Hosted by the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and Seminole Tribe of Florida, the event will include dinner, live entertainment, and a charity auction to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Broward County. Last year's charity auction raised over $175,000.

Attendees at this year's Bikers Bash celebration will also have the opportunity to witness a number of great bikes from an impressive line-up of builders. Motorcycle builders lined up this year include Todd Silicato of Todd's Custom Cycles, John Shope of John Shope's Sinister Industries, Dave and Jody Perewitz of Perewitz Cycle Fabrication along with Eddie Trotta of Thunder Cycle Design.

Todd Silicato - Custom motorcycle builder and fabricator from Huntington Beach, California, Todd Silicato has been building custom cars and motorcycles for most of his life. Builder and owner of Todd's Cycles, Silicato's custom built motorcycles and motorcycle parts have been featured in countless motorcycle magazines worldwide.

Creating a blend of old-school craftsmanship and modern, state of the art technology, Silicato's bikes look and perform like no others in the industry.

John Shope- A premier custom motorcycle builder based in Phoenix, AZ, Shope is founder and owner of Sinister Industries which specializes in custom ground up bike builds, one off motorcycle parts and custom hotrods. For over 20 years he has been building the baddest and most creative bikes seen on roads and highways throughout the nation.

Dave and Jody Perewitz- Dave Perewitz is considered one of the deans of the custom motorcycle industry. Founder and owner of Perewitz Cycle Fabrication in Bridgewater, MA, Dave Perewitz has over 30 years experience building and customizing motorcycles. A self-taught designer, mechanic, painter and fabricator, Perewitz's one-of-a-kind, hand-built choppers are a delicate blend of engineering, design, performance, power and personality. Perewitz's daughter Jody has also taken to the family business.

Around motorcycles since the day she was born, Jody has had a hand in building numerous motorcycles as well as focusing her talent toward the marketing and growth of the Perewitz name to an instantly recognizable brand. Eddie Trotta- You have undoubtedly seen Trotta's custom choppers on the Discovery Channel's Biker Build-Off series, in person on the Hard Rock Custom Bikes Tour, or have caught a glimpse of one ripping down the road. Trotta who owns Thunder Cycle Design in Fort Lauderdale, FL, designs motorcycles that are so distinctive you know that it's an Eddie Trotta.

Trotta has built hundreds of motorcycles with his name plastered all over TV and in bike magazines throughout the world. With a clean and classy look, Trotta's bikes have lines similar to those of an elite sports car.

PPG Announces SEMA Celebrity Lineup

PPG has announced its lineup of celebrities who will appear during the 2010 SEMA show in Las Vegas at the Las Vegas Convention Center November 2–5. Celebrity painters Gene Winfield, Charley Hutton, and Dave and Jody Perewitz will all be in attendance at the PPG indoor (booth #24813) and outdoor (Silver Lot #09) exhibits. All four will be on hand to discuss their painting techniques with PPG Vibrance Collection custom finishes and Envirobase High Performance waterborne coatings. They will also be available to sign autographs.

Gene Winfield has been working on cars for more than 60 years and is well known for his custom creations and trademark “blended” paint jobs. His car concepts have been featured on a number of television shows including “Star Trek” and “Get Smart” and movies such as “Blade Runner,” “Robocop,” “Back to the Future,” and “The Last Starfighter.” His work has earned him the America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award three times, the NHRA’s Wally lifetime achievement award, and induction into several custom car halls of fame. Currently Winfield travels the world customizing cars for select customers.

Charley Hutton has received a number of prominent honors during his career. His talents have been recognized with two Ridler Awards, several Street Rod of the Year and Custom Rod of the Year awards as well as an America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award. He attained television fame and national exposure through the Discovery Channel’s “American Hot Rod” show, on Hot Rod TV, and on The Learning Channel’s “Overhaulin’.” He works out of his shop in Nampa, Idaho, Charley Hutton’s Color Studio, where he exclusively uses PPG Automotive Refinish products.

Dave Perewitz, the “King of Flames,” is one of America’s most popular motorcycle builders and customizers and a devotee of PPG products. Operating from his shop, Perewitz Cycle Fabrication, in Bridgewater, Mass., he is known for his one-of-a-kind creations and signature flame designs. Perewitz competed in two Biker Build-Offs on The Discovery Channel and recently built a custom car with Street Rodder magazine and Factory Five Racing, creating an orange FFR ’33 street rod. His daughter Jody, a key part of the Perewitz team, has been active in building bikes and designs all the Perewitz brand merchandise. She is now taking after her father and painting bikes in her own distinctive Perewitz style.

STURGIS -- People in Japan, South Korea and China will soon have a taste of the Sturgis rally without having to come to Sturgis, courtesy of a new company, SturgisAsia.

The company, headed by Tom Bandy, has a booth at the Motorcycle Expo next to the Sturgis Community Center on Lazelle Street.

Bandy, of Rochester, Minn., has been a rally licensee for a dozen years and has been attending the rally for nearly 40 years.

“I had a dream to bring Sturgis to the rest of the world,” Bandy said.

It has taken him a few years, but his organization now has its first trip planned: It is heading to South Korea Sept. 17-21.

SturgisAsia will fly participants and their motorcycles to South Korea.

The program in South Korea will include a hill climb, a mini moto cross, a rock concert, a traditional Korean performance, a custom bike show and a biker fashion show, plus plenty of riding through the South Korean countryside.

He said he figures to draw tens of thousands of South Koreans to the events.

“They’re gobbling up western culture,” Bandy said of the South Koreans.

In South Korea, the tour will hold a Support the Troops Day for American and South Korean military. Accompanied by American service personnel, the tour group will ride up to the demilitarized zone, Bandy said. He said he visited a military base in South Korea and commanders are enthusiastic about the visit.

VIPs signed up for the first trip include custom builders Arlen Ness, Cory Ness, Eddie Trotta, Dave Perewitz and Donnie Smith, as well as Harley-Davidson artist Scott Jacobs and Michele Smith, host of “American Thunder” on the Speed Channel.

Next year, SturgisAsia will take a group of bikers to South Korea and Japan. In 2012, it plans to visit South Korea, Japan and China. And in 2013, it will add Australia to the tour.

Bandy said he didn’t know how many people were signed up to make the trip.

The South Korea trip runs about $3,500 for two people, according to the SturgisAsia web site. But Bandy said prices vary, depending on the travel package chosen.

Yesterday I had my family over my house for a Mother's Day cookout. My BFF Ella was last to show up but I was super excited to see her sweatshirt!!!
I tried to trade her for a new one of kind sweatshirt I had made for this Perewitz vintage sweatshirt for but she wouldn't do it! I even offered her cold hard cash!
No luck but I'm still working on her. She got the sweatshirt from my aunt who had it obviously forever and kept it in mint shape.
To me it was like finding a really cool old bike in mint shape that you know would just be cool to have.
The bike that is on the back of this sweat is actually in our showroom window!

I haven't laughed this hard in a long time! Friday afternoon my BFF Sandy and I were downstairs and who comes around the corner outside but Jay and Jeff (who is Sandy's BF, I know your lovin the initials) on this Twosome bicycle.
It was the funniest thing! Of course we had to try it out. I got on with Jay and let me tell you I was a little nervous because you are behind someone, no brakes and really no control of steering... I guess it is very similar to riding on the back of a motorcycle except you have to peddle! Maybe that's why I always wanted to ride my own bike... but it was fine with Jay leading.
My dad bought this at an auction a while ago and it has been up on the mezzanine ever since. It was definitely worth the buy just for the laughs. Too bad my dad wouldn't get on it!

Boston Globe - Motorcycles are everywhere!

One of the days we were in Laughlin we decided to go for a ride, my dad, Dave Silvia (AKA Mull because he used to have a mullet!), Joe Ricci, Our newest "employee" Murph and I. We left Laughlin to head for the small cowboy town of Oatman which is along Route 66.

The sky looked a little shaky but we left anyway. Sure enough we get caught in a hail storm. Just small hail but enough to hurt. There was no sense in stopping because where are you going to go if you pull over in the desert?

I was riding the Indian, which is such a cool bike to ride, but it has no front fender so you can imagine how wet and dirty I was. It only lasted about 10 minutes but enough to get us soaked Fortunately by the time we got to Oatman we were dry.

This little town was so cool. It was another way of life. The population was about 100 people and probably as many donkeys! We walked around the town for a while then had some lunch and tons of laughs thanks to Murph before we headed back to Laughlin.

The ride back was good except being cold! Who would have though Massachusetts was warmer than the desert!

ROAD WARRIOR: Watch out for squids, cagers at River Run

It turns out that bumping into a rival motorcycle club member clutching a bloodied crescent wrench inside a Laughlin casino isn't necessarily the most treacherous part of the annual Laughlin River Run.

If you're a motorcyclist, it's actually the trip to the riverside town that can prove deadly.

Admittedly, I am uneducated when it comes to motorcycles and safety.

I'm what my Bay Area biking friend Marty calls a "cager," which at first seemed a bit offensive until I learned it simply means my transportation of choice is a car.

Over the next few days, an estimated 100,000 bikers are expected to roll through the Las Vegas Valley on their way to the River Run festivities.

What this means, according to Allstate Insurance anyway, is that we cagers need to be aware of those on two wheels.

Now before we proceed, allow me to share with fellow cagers a question posed to Marty when he explained that motorists are careless when it comes to motorcycles.

Essentially, Marty was asked about the uncaring behavior of the biker jackasses who swerve in and out of traffic on the freeway when everyone is moving at a steady 70 mph. Jackass is not the proper term, he said; those guilty of this irritating practice are "squids."

Squids are typically in their early 20s and they don't bother to undergo formal training before hopping on a sport bike (known as crotch-rockets in the world of motorcycle enthusiasts) and tearing down the freeway.

The other class of less responsible bikers are, in Marty's words, "baby boomer yuppies" who hit a midlife crisis and purchase a Harley-Davidson far too big and powerful for their skill level. They might take their ride down to the neighborhood bar and show it off, then overconsume and wipe out.

The sluggish economy coupled with soaring fuel prices prompted the population of these two classes of bikers to explode over the past couple years. Aside from yuppies and squids -- and by the way, motorcyclists are bitter that they tarnish the community's reputation -- most bikers take pride in respecting others on the road and take safety seriously.

(As my friend Dean said after witnessing a bare-footed weed-whacking session, safety doesn't have a quitting time).

According to the online Hurt Report, three-fourths of motorcycle accidents involve a passenger vehicle. And in the majority of those accidents, the vehicle violated the motorcyclist's right-of-way; drivers didn't see the biker until it was too late.

Intersections are the most common location for motorcycle-vehicle crashes. In 2008, 75 percent of the 961 motorcycle-involved accidents in Clark County were at intersections or in close proximity to major crossings, according to Allstate's figures.

This is where Dave Perewitz, a Massachusetts-based chopper builder, comes in.

Perewitz is an ambassador of the new program dubbed ONE: Once is Never Enough. The campaign encourages motorists and motorcyclists alike to look left, right and left again when at an intersection. You remember the drill; we all learned it in kindergarten.

"People are so excited about getting to the event and looking at the cool bikes, they're not paying enough attention to what they're doing or where they're going," Perewitz said. "Take that extra few seconds at an intersection to look twice, because once isn't enough. That could prevent a crash. It could save someone's life. It could save your life."

Perewitz is teaming up with Allstate to place yellow signs reminding motorists to be aware of motorcyclists. You might see the signs at two intersections deemed to be the most frequent site of motorcycle collisions: Tropicana Avenue and Koval Lane and Rancho Drive and Washington Avenue.

Perewitz believes the elevated awareness will prevent accidents.

Donnie Smith Show

The Donnie Smith Motorcycle Show, a staple in the Upper Midwest, is held in St. Paul every March and gives winter-weary bikers the chance to see what’s new, what’s now vintage, and what hasn’t changed. It’s also a chance to reconnect with old friends and make a few new ones.

The dates coincide with what I’d call the Hamsters’ early season get-together.
Dave invited me to St. Paul and I jumped at the chance. He recommended staying at the St. Paul Hotel, a beautiful old structure near the St. Paul RiverCentre where the show was being held.

My cabbie was from Ethiopia (I always ask) and was the leader of his Lutheran Church. We talked about my and Streets’ sons serving in the Army and that they were all deployed last year, but now back, safe. He let out a few “Halleluiah’s” and raised both hands. Given that he was driving at the time, I was going to ask him to hold onto the wheel, but we were driving straight and he was well intentioned, so I thanked him.

Check-in was a snap and I met up with Dave and we went across the park in front of the hotel to a very nice building…I think it was previously a private club…to the Hamsters’ Dinner. Great people, great food, a few laughs and a birthday cake for Donnie.

The next morning, I went for a walk in downtown St. Paul. I hadn’t been there for a while and forgot how many buildings are connected by skyways so you don’t have to go outside during the winter. Really makes commerce easy when the snow flies and the temperatures are below zero.

The show was packed. The upstairs area was lined with vendors and the huge show area was split into the regular show and the swap meet. I spent a bit of time at the swap meet, but really didn’t know what I was looking for. I saw a lot of take-off parts and couldn’t think of anything else I needed.

As usual, Dave was swamped as soon as he arrived. The local FOX affiliate interviewed Donnie and him. I spent time looking for styles I liked that would be incorporated into my ‘50s chopper Dave’s building. I gave up on copper pieces…they just look too “new”, and liked brass much more. I’ll go with a 7” headlight, reminiscent of the headlight on my and Steets’ father’s ‘37 BSA, which Dave is restoring. A “king and queen” seat is out, too…lacking the appropriate amount of posterior support (does this seat make my butt look big???).

There were tons of great bikes there…including many as part of a completion for high schoolers. Donnie was there to hand out the prizes.

I met Bob “Rocket Bob” Gullickson (www.rocketbob.net) , a paraplegic, who will be trying to get into the Guinness Book of World Records on September 5, 2010 at the Brainerd International Raceway by having the fastest wheel chair. I think it has some sort of jet/rocket engine on it. Fuel is $100/gal so he was selling memorabilia and raising funds. I got a t-shirt and helped with the fuel.

I saw two bikes, one are rad prostreet and the other a Road Glide with..I think....a 31” front wheel. They looked cool, but I wondered about the handling characteristics. I think the sensation with a 31” front is like riding a gyroscope, although I’ll confess to having never actually ridden a gyroscope.

Later Saturday, we went to Don Nolan’s Acme Tattoo (www.acmetattoo.com) and hung out with, Nolan, T, Beth, Gabe and Margo. It’s a really cool shop and they are great people. Kory Dave and Ted got some work done. I got a chance to look at the bikes Dave built for Nolan over the years as well as a ton of motorcycle and tattoo memorabilia I think I know what I want my first piece to be, so, at the risk of being viewed as a dilettante, I’ll probably stop on my way out to Sturgis in August to have it done.

It was Nolan’s birthday, too, so we all went out to celebrate and I was treated to a great dinner.

Another great day with really great people.

Sunday was a quiet day as we had a leisurely breakfast and made our way over to the show. I had an early flight out (heading to Chicago for a meeting), so I bought a cool commemorative shirt, (a steal at $7!), said goodbye and headed back to the hotel for my bag.

My cabbie was again from Ethiopia, and got me to the airport in plenty of time.

So, a great way to spend a weekend and a welcome break from the winter doldrums.

TeamMs.org Walkers had a great day at Walk MS in Easton last Saturday. It was a little cloudy and breezy, but great temps for walking! It was great to see the age-range of people participating - from the littlest of kids (in some fancy 'rigs') to groups of teenagers with specially made team shirts to a group of older gentlemen walking with their friend who was blinded by MS. Seeing this great mix of people coming out for this common goal was inspiring to see.

Thanks to your support and donations we raised $3,550 to help the National MS Society fight this disease! Thank you all!

Motorcycle whiz Perewitz to be featured at Bayside Expo

A Bridgewater resident who fabricates custom motorcycles will be among the auto enthusiasts exhibiting custom vehicles at the 36th annual Town Fair Tire World of Wheels (www.worldofwheels.com) custom car show at Boston’s Bayside Expo Center March 12-14.

The show will pack Bayside with its now familiar mix of custom cars, an expected 300, and special attractions. Most of the custom vehicles are created by area automotive buffs, and the local Bridgewater resident exhibiting his custom creation in this year’s show is Dave Perewitz of Perewitz Cycle Fabrications in Bridgewater.

Perewitz has been building and customizing motorcycles since the early ’70s. Working from his family-run shop in Bridgewater, he builds one-of-a-kind, hand-built creations popular for their blend of design, engineering, performance and beauty - and being a gifted painter, he is well known for his flame designs.

Many celebrities have commissioned Perewitz for custom builds, including Aerosmith’s Brad Whitford, Hulk Hogan, NASCAR’s Tony Stewart, Ray Evernham, Kyle Petty, Brooks & Dunn and many more. His reputation for excellence was heightened further when he competed in two Biker Build-Offs for the Discovery Channel’s popular cable program.

Last year, he exhibited his work at the Shelburne Museum in Vermont called “Full Throttle: Vintage Motorcycles, Custom Choppers and Racing Machines - The art of the bike from iconic American classics to one-off choppers and racing bikes built for speed.”

The Town Fair Tire “World of Wheels,” holder of Bayside’s weekend attendance record, each year attracts local creators of custom vehicles of all types, representing millions of dollars worth of one-of-a-kind hot rods, customs, street rods, collectibles, race cars, antiques, restorations, tuners and more. The show also always offers spectators the chance to meet and get free autographs from celebrities, to see specialty vehicle exhibits and to be entertained by many other attractions for the whole family.

Making personal appearances at this year’s show will be television and movie star and director Henry “Fonzie” Winkler, who became famous originally as The Fonz on TV’s “Happy Days,” Debby Ryan, who plays Bailey Pickett on the Disney Channel’s “Suite Life on Deck,” WWE diva Melina and UFC superstar Rich Franklin. Appearance times are available at www.worldofwheels.com.

Special automotive exhibits will include Drag City USA and Motorama. Drag City USA and will feature Kalitta’s ’67 Bounty Hunter, Prudhomme’s ’70 Wynns Winder and Garlits’ ’60 Swamp Rat III, ’62 Swamp Rat IV and ’66 Swamp Rat VIII. Motorama will show off traditional rods, customs and bobbers not seen at other Boston-area car shows. Spectators also will be able to shop an automotive memorabilia and toy show.

The 7-foot-tall Comic Bot singing and dancing robots will perform in the Town Fair Tire booth during the weekend, and East Coast Championship Wrestling and Boston Derby Dames roller derby demonstrations will be staged in the show’s Action Arena all weekend.

The 36th annual Town Fair Tire World of Wheels show hours are Friday, March 12, 5-10:30 p.m., Saturday, March 13, 10 a.m.-10:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 14, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults, $5 for children 6-12, and free for children 5 and under. Discount coupons for $2 off adult and children’s tickets will be available at participating Town Fair Tire stores. Boston’s Bayside Expo Center is located off I-93 at Columbia Road and is a short walk from the MBTA Red Line’s JFK/UMass stop. Free shuttles will run to and from the T stop during show hours.

Remember when you were a kid and went to your first candy store, well that's how I would describe my first trip to the 2010 V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati. It was a treat for me to meet some of the coolest people in the motorcycling industry and to see the latest and best products being made today for the V-Twin market.

It was amazing to watch the Perewitz crew working at the show. Kory with his latest creation, a cool looking custom Hyabusa, walking the floors with Jeff as he met with all of the vendors and manufacturers, and Dave being stopped every 10 feet for pictures and autographs.

I want to say thank you to the Perewitz crew for the invite and making me feel like a kid again, and a special thank you to the guys at PPG and Kicker Audio for taking such good care of us.

This bike is currently residing in our showroom because much like New England, Canada is very cold and snowy! Maybe you remeber but a couple months back I posted a snapshot of this paint job. Well here it is complete! Such a cool looking bike.

And Goose is going to ride this tough Dyna home as soon as the weather turns. In the mean time it is sure to get a lot of looks and good comments! I have already heard a bunch.

New England's current forecast... especially the small town south of Boston, Bridgewater.

Currently we have about 16 inches of snow on the ground and with the current 10 day forecast it should be gone by mid April.

It is a blistering 20 degrees out but once you factor in the wind blown snow that hits your face, it's got to be single digits BUT the sun is out!

Never mind the tempeture but today is the shortest day of the year, so even if you could endure the cold riding, good luck with daylight!
